The Ministry of Families and Social Affairs, through the Directorate General for Children, Youth, Families, Equality and Diversity, has organized a conference and workshop on work-life balance and shared responsibility to mark the International Day of Families. The event will feature an inspiring talk by Laura Baena, founder of the Malasmadres Club, titled “I’m a Bad Mother, So What?” in which she will share her journey of sacrifice and advocacy for a more just and sustainable society. The session will include interactive activities and games to raise awareness of the mental load and the lack of shared responsibilities, which predominantly affect women.

Laura Baena will speak about how, after becoming a mother, she encountered a reality that was far from what she had expected, facing barriers that forced her to give up her career ambitions. Her talk will focus on the struggle for gender equality and aims to inspire women who refuse to give up their dreams, as well as men who believe in building a more equitable society.

Shared Responsibility Is Everyone’s Business

The conference will be followed by a workshop titled “Shared Responsibility Is Everyone’s Business”, led by Maite Egoscozabal, a sociologist from the association Yo no renuncio (“I’m Not Giving Up”). The session will focus on the distribution of domestic and family tasks and promote awareness about the importance of shared responsibility, featuring a variety of group dynamics.

Laura Baena is the founder of the Malasmadres Club, mother of three daughters, advertising creative, and a natural communicator. Since founding the club in 2014, she has built a community of over one million followers, aiming to demystify motherhood and break the myth of the perfect mother. She fights for a new social model of motherhood, one in which women don’t have to choose between their professional careers and raising their children.

The Yo no renuncio association advocates for work-life balance measures, conducts sociological research, offers workshops and services to businesses, and runs the Yellow Helpline for Work-Life Balance, which provides free legal advice.

Among other recognitions, Laura Baena was named one of the TOP 100 Women Leaders in Spain in 2016, 2018, and 2019, becoming an honorary TOP 100 at just 38 years old. In 2021, she received an Honourable Mention from the Clara Campoamor Award by the Madrid City Council and the Meridiana Award from the Andalusian Government.
