This international initiative promotes the values of transparency, citizen participation, and collaboration in public management.

The Government of the Balearic Islands is joining the global celebration of Open Government Week, an international event promoted by the Open Government Partnership (OGP) that advocates for transparency, civic participation, and collaboration in public administration.

This worldwide initiative, taking place this year from May 19 to 25, aims to disseminate the principles and practices of open government to build a shared culture between public administrations and citizens, based on transparency, integrity, participation, and accountability.

Throughout the week, the regional government, specifically the Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administrations, through the Directorate General for Coordination and Transparency, has scheduled various activities to reinforce its commitment to open government.

As a central action, on May 2,1 the Interdepartmental Open Government Commission will convene. This cross-sector body coordinates transparency and participation policies across all ministries. The commission will review the current status of ongoing initiatives, assess the 2024 reports on citizen participation activities, proactive disclosure, the right of access to public information, and open data, and will explore new actions to further advance the openness of the regional administration.

To bring open government resources closer to the public, the Government will use its institutional campaign “Did you know…?” to promote the tools available within the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (CAIB) related to open governance.

Among the promoted resources are:

  • The Citizen Participation Portal, where ongoing participatory processes and procedures can be consulted;
  • The Transparency Portal, which publishes institutional, financial, contractual, and regulatory information, among other data.
  • The right to request public information not already published;
  • The Open Data Portal provides public datasets in reusable formats.
  • And the Open Government Portal, which centralises all information related to this management model.

Finally, to better understand how citizens use these resources, a survey has been made available on the Citizen Participation Portal. It will remain open throughout the week to gather public feedback on awareness of the different portals and rights, ease of use of the digital platforms, and suggestions for improvement. The results will be analyzed to better adapt the tools to real user needs and identify any access barriers that need to be addressed.

A Chance to Reaffirm Commitment

Open Government Week is an opportunity for the Balearic Government to reaffirm its commitment to the principles of open governance—a model of administration that is more transparent, participative, and collaborative, where citizens play an active role in public decision-making and have easy and direct access to governmental information.

The initiatives promoted during this week are part of the Government’s long-term strategy to modernize public administration and align it with international open government standards, always with the goal of improving democratic quality and delivering better public services to the people of the Balearic Islands.
