NECSTouR is a network of European regions working to develop competitive and sustainable tourism

The goal of the meeting is to foster collaboration on sustainability, climate change, governance, and the use of common indicators across Europe.

Pere Joan Planas, Director of the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB), together with Miquel Àngel Rosselló, General Coordinator of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, participated from May 20 to 22 in the General Assembly of NECSTouR, the network of sustainable regions of Europe. The event, hosted by the Lombardy Region in Milan, brought together members to strengthen collaboration in areas such as sustainability, climate change, governance, and the use of common indicators across the continent.

AETIB is a member of the NECSTouR Steering Committee, a network of over 47 European regions dedicated to promoting competitive and sustainable tourism. During this year’s assembly, the Consell d’Eivissa officially joined as a new member.

NECSTouR aims to create synergies among tourist regions, with a special focus on sustainability and climate change, technology and innovation, and the use of harmonised indicators across Europe. Governance is also a key element, all organised under three main pillars or “hubs”:

  • Climate Hub: Focused on climate-related actions and promoting active participation from members in climate initiatives. These include measurable outcomes, emission reductions at destinations, and climate risk mitigation strategies, such as regenerative tourism and sustainable mobility efforts.
  • Data Hub: Aimed at building a platform of sustainability indicators to develop and test initiatives, enabling strategic decision-making in the future.
  • Governance Hub: Designed to enhance awareness and capacity among NECSTouR members to create participatory, multi-stakeholder strategies for destination management and development, with a collaborative vision at the regional, national, and European levels. It also facilitates alignment between regional priorities and European Commission agendas.

Pere Joan Planas, Director of AETIB, highlighted that:
“This assembly allows us to engage face-to-face with regions that have different characteristics—sharing knowledge, generating commitments, addressing challenges, and promoting actions that support dialogue and the evolution of various tourism models across Europe.”
Ultimately, he added, the aim is for tourist destinations to become “better places to live and better places to visit.”
