Minister Antoni Vera outlines the department’s plans for the next school year

The assembly hall of the Ministry of Education and Universities hosted a meeting with principals from various educational institutions in Mallorca, including Secondary Education Institutes (IES), Adult Education Centers (CEPA), Official Language Schools (EOI), the School of Art, Integrated Vocational Training Centers (CIFP), and Special Education Centers (CEE).

During the event, Education Minister Antoni Vera, accompanied by State Secretary for Educational Development Mateu Suñer, Secretary General Tomeu Riera, Directors-General Catalina Ginart, Neus Riera, Maria Isabel Salas, Director-General Ismael Alonso, and IBISEC manager Marco Alarcón, reviewed the 2024–2025 academic year and presented plans for the 2025–2026 school year.

Several technical staff from the department also contributed to the session. Minister Vera expressed his gratitude for the work carried out by teachers and school leadership teams throughout the current academic year and outlined the key focus areas for the coming year.

A major topic was the ongoing effort to reduce bureaucracy in schools. Vera announced that the new “Llull” digital platform will launch in public schools starting in September, with a phased rollout over the next two years. Teachers will be trained on how to use the platform, which aims to streamline communication between schools and the Ministry of Education and Universities.

Vera also provided updates on:

  • New curriculum frameworks, currently in development.
  • A unified policy on mobile phone use in all public schools.
  • Regulated use of digital screens, as per the new curriculum.
  • And a new ban on energy drink consumption during school outings, for which specific instructions will be issued to all schools.

Regarding the hiring of substitute teachers, Vera noted that there will be two rounds of position allocation over the summer, in addition to the regular September round, to ensure that most vacancies are filled by the start of the school year.

Infrastructure improvements were also addressed. Vera emphasised that upgrading educational facilities across the Balearic Islands is a top priority for the regional government. The 10-year infrastructure plan includes:

  • 77 new schools,
  • 60 school expansions, and
  • 158 renovations,
With an expected investment of over €600 million.

Following this session with secondary school principals in Mallorca, the Ministry of Education and Universities plans to hold similar meetings with principals from other public schools across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. These meetings aim to provide updates and address key issues for school leadership ahead of the upcoming academic year.
