Starting this Wednesday, the arrivals terminal at Menorca Airport features a large photograph welcoming visitors and informing them that they are arriving in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

This initiative is the result of collaboration between AENA and the Island Council of Menorca, through the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency. Its goal is to reinforce the message and raise awareness from the very first moment that visitors step onto the island—that they are entering a territory recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

The chosen image is an underwater photograph taken in Menorca by local photographer Enric Gener, known as 27mm. It shows a diver immersed in Menorca’s marine environment. The image symbolises the richness and fragility of our natural surroundings, as well as the balance with human interaction, and invites viewers to approach Menorca with respect and responsibility.

The presentation event was attended by the Director of Menorca Airport, Santiago Martínez-Cava Arenas; the Island Director of the Biosphere Reserve, David Vidal; the Environmental Education Officer from the Department of Environment, Joana Maria Pons; and the Head of the Management Office of AENA Menorca, Abelardo Olives.

According to David Vidal, this initiative “aims to reinforce the information we provide to our visitors about the Biosphere Reserve and create an emotional connection with everyone who arrives on the island. It is a direct and visual message that reminds us this territory is special and that we all have a role in preserving it.”

The placement of this photograph is part of the awareness-raising initiatives promoted by the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency, to promote the values of sustainability and territorial conservation both to residents and to visitors arriving on the island.
