For the current school year, which is coming to an end, 127 courses are planned in 16 schools across 6 municipalities on the island.

The Island Council of Menorca has approved a cooperation agreement with the Chess Menorca Association to implement the ‘Chess in Schools 2024–25’ program, through which the Council will allocate a total of €25,000—€5,000 more than the previous year.

The objective of this program is to teach primary school students how to play chess during school hours, through 10-hour courses. The initiative aligns with growing support for the inclusion of chess as a compulsory—or at least elective—subject in school curricula, due to its benefits in fostering reflection, decision-making, and intellectual development.

During the 2023–2024 school year, demand from schools increased, demonstrating that the program is positively received. A total of 122 courses were held in 16 schools across 6 municipalities. For the 2024–2025 school year, the high level of interest continues and is even expected to grow, with 127 courses planned in the same number of schools and municipalities across Menorca.

A notable development this year is the program’s expansion into secondary schools on the island. The initiative will be primarily funded by the Island Council. Once the program concludes, its results will be evaluated, and the possibility of expanding it in future academic years will be considered.

With a total budget of €52,120, the program is supported not only by the Island Council but also by local municipalities and the parents’ associations of participating schools.
