Exhibitions
“Gustavo. From the Street to the Cosmos. Retrospective 1963–2025” is curated by Pere Cortada and Cati Vallespir and features 32 years of work by Gustavo Peñalver, born in Cartagena in 1939. Known for his expressive power, his international career is showcased through 83 paintings, 14 sculptures, three display cases with documents and personal objects, and three audiovisual pieces.
The exhibition is spread across four rooms: the Chapel and three additional rooms in the central building.
The Chapel presents an overview of the exhibition, the artist’s biography, and a summary of his work from the 1960s and 1970s. Watercolours and drawings will be featured under titles like “The Street Artist”, “Balearic Islands”, “Camel Tour Around Mallorca”, and Belgian landscapes known for their intensity. A political chapter of his life is also included via audiovisuals.
The ground floor of the building displays works from the 1980s, including fluorescent paintings such as “The Poet-Artist” and the “From Berlin to Milwaukee” collection, addressing the cultural axis of that decade. It also features grotesque characters in absurd scenarios.
The first floor showcases works from the 1990s and early 2000s, including sculptures and paintings focused on Mallorca, highlighting Gustavo’s role as a cultural ambassador for the island.
The second floor presents his most recent work from 2000 onwards, including serigraphs, sculptures, murals, stained glass, and his creative process of redrawn sketches depicting his unique artistic vision.
“Tinojay” by Albert Corbí, winner of the 2024 Premi Mallorca de Fotografia Contemporània, is curated by Francesc Bonnín and displayed in three annex rooms at the Aljub. The long-term photography project centres around a set of petroglyphs. It features three series exploring themes like the colonizer and the indigenous through a political reinterpretation, and a conceptual ‘anti’ astronomical cartography that challenges navigational stability and reflects the hallucinatory nature of colonization.
“Anything Can End Everything at Any Moment” by Marina Planas, winner of the 2024 Premi Mallorca de Fotografia de Talent Illenc, is hosted at the Arxiu del So i de la Imatge de Mallorca. Also curated by Francesc Bonnín, this exhibition explores the intersection of art and mental health. Through a combination of photography and audiovisual material, it invites viewers to reflect on this current and relevant topic.
