The island institution allocates €200,000 in 2025 to strengthen the cultural and international reach of the space dedicated to the renowned photographer.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, visited the Toni Catany International Photography Centre in Llucmajor this Thursday, accompanied by the Vice President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, and the Mayor of Llucmajor, Xisca Lascolas.

The centre, inaugurated two years ago and located in the photographer’s birthplace, has become a benchmark for the preservation, dissemination, and study of Toni Catany’s work, as well as for the promotion of artistic photography on an international scale.

President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, Visits the Legacy of Toni Catany at the International Photography Centre in Llucmajor

During the visit, Galmés and Roca toured the two current exhibitions:

  • “Toni Catany: A History of Photography”, a comprehensive retrospective that brings together nearly 300 of Catany’s photographs alongside works from his collection, including pieces by masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, and Man Ray.
  • “My Mediterranean. Toni Catany and Josep Pla, a poetic dialogue between Catany’s photographs and texts by the Empordà-born writer Josep Pla, portraying an intimate and evocative vision of the Mediterranean.

President Galmés expressed great satisfaction with the visit and emphasised the significance of the centre:

“The Toni Catany Centre not only preserves the legacy of one of Mallorca’s most internationally acclaimed photographers, but it also projects his work globally. Catany captured the soul of the landscape and the light of the Mediterranean. Having a centre of this calibre in Llucmajor is a source of pride for all Mallorcans.”

This year, the Consell de Mallorca is allocating a budget of €200,000 to the Toni Catany Foundation to support its 2025 cultural programme. The funding will contribute to the exhibitions and a wide range of complementary activities, including lecture series, family workshops, music, performing arts, literature events, and interdisciplinary projects linking photography with science and architecture.

Galmés reaffirmed the Consell de Mallorca’s commitment to culture, stating:

“This centre is a key element in positioning Mallorca as a reference in contemporary photography. Investing in culture also means investing in our identity and in the international projection of the island.”
