Promoting the emotional and social well-being of older people and strengthening bonds of respect, recognition, and collaboration with younger generations — that is the goal of the intergenerational project “Look with the Heart” organised by the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS). The initiative included participation from members of the Centres for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy (CPAP) in Son Bru (Puigpunyent), Can Real (Petra), Avenida Argentina (Palma), Manacor, and Felanitx, along with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade primary students and 1st and 2nd year secondary students from the Sant Vicenç de Paül School in La Vileta.

IMAS Concludes the Intergenerational Project “Look with the Heart” with an Event at Sant Vicenç de Paül School in La Vileta

The Island Director of Community Care and Promotion of Personal Autonomy, Catalina Maria Mascaró, who attended today’s closing event, highlighted the value of these types of activities as a key tool to promote active and healthy ageing, while maintaining a connection with the community. These are spaces that foster participation and social bonds, where meaningful relationships are built and life is seen from diverse perspectives.”

During today’s event, the photo exhibition “Shared Gazes” was inaugurated, in which participants from the workshops expressed emotions explored throughout the school year. Additionally, CPAP members and the students shared activities they had prepared together over the past nine months, focusing on six basic emotions to encourage respectful interactions, emotional communication, and empathy.

“Activities like this are essential to prevent isolation and to keep older people’s connections to their surroundings alive. It’s important to recognise the role they play today and will continue to play, not only for what they have done, but for all they still have to offer the community,” Mascaró emphasised.

This year marked the fourth consecutive edition of the joint project between IMAS and Sant Vicenç de Paül School. With today’s event, a cycle of workshops and gatherings came to an end, reaffirming IMAS’s commitment to an inclusive and cohesive society where all stages of life have their place, voice, and value.
