The Directorate General of Mobility of the Government of the Balearic Islands has opened the public consultation period for the future Alcúdia train project, which plans to extend the current Palma to Sa Pobla railway line to Port d’Alcúdia and its maritime station. This is the second project currently underway for the expansion of the Mallorca Railway Services (SFM) network.

Following the approval of the feasibility study, the Government is now launching the public consultation phase. As President Margalida Prohens explained during the presentation, this project will represent a key new infrastructure for mobility in Mallorca, aligning with the Government’s commitment to high-capacity public transport as a real alternative to car use and a way to reduce road congestion.

Mobility Opens Public Consultation Period for the Alcúdia Train Project

Through the resolution of the Directorate General of Mobility, published this Saturday in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB), the feasibility study for the network extension from Enlace-Sa Pobla to Alcúdia has been initially approved. The study was prepared by the company Ayesa and led by SFM in coordination with the Public Works Department of the Directorate General.

The public consultation period will remain open for 45 working days, during which the public may submit relevant comments and objections. In addition to opening the public consultation, the initiation of the strategic environmental assessment procedure has also been ordered.

In this way, the Government is progressing with the second SFM network expansion project, following last year’s development of the Palma to Llucmajor train project, which is still under administrative processing. Meanwhile, work continues on the existing project for the new Manacor-Artà railway line.

It is expected that with the commissioning of the lines to Alcúdia and Llucmajor, the number of passengers will increase by 10.6 million—a 96% rise compared to the 11 million passengers transported by SFM in 2024. The new lines will also extend the rail network by 47.1 km, a 55% increase from the current 86.4 km.

Alcúdia Train Project

The new railway line to Alcúdia is expected to serve 2.1 million users annually. The project includes six stations, one of which will be a newly relocated Sa Pobla station closer to the town centre. Another key aspect is the operation of a train-tram system upon arrival in Alcúdia and continuing to the final stop at the commercial port.

The planned route will be 17.1 km long, including a 5 km tunnel section under the Son Fe and Sant Martí hills. This option avoids affecting the S’Albufera Natural Park and minimises impact on third parties. It also provides a viable alternative that overcomes the limitations that previously hindered earlier proposals during past legislatures.

The proposed layout shortens the route and enables faster travel to Port d’Alcúdia. The remaining 12.1 km will run above ground, with 7.6 km in standard train mode and 4.5 km in tram mode. The train-tram system will allow better integration with urban areas, particularly the more densely populated zones, where the train will operate at a maximum speed of 30 km/h, facilitating coexistence with pedestrians, bicycles, and other vehicles while adapting to the local environment.

The project also includes five park-and-ride facilities—one near the new Sa Pobla station and four others in different locations throughout Alcúdia. It also plans connections with the interurban bus network (TIB), promoting multimodal public transport.

Project Timeline and Budget

The drafting of technical project plans is scheduled to be awarded in 2026. Approval of the basic project is expected in 2027, including a new public consultation period and the environmental impact declaration. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and conclude in 2031. The initial estimated budget is €225.5 million (excluding VAT), with the majority (€212.5 million) allocated to construction works and the remainder to rolling stock and other project-related components.
