The Government opens Tender for Replacement and Maintenance Contract of Escalators at Palma’s Intermodal Station
Currently, six escalators are installed at the Intermodal Station under CTM’s management—four at the main entrance and two providing access to the bus platforms. These were installed in 2007 and have not been replaced since. For over ten years, the main entrance escalators were exposed to the elements, which deteriorated their condition. An effort was made to remedy this in 2018 with the installation of a pergola. However, in recent years, the escalators have experienced numerous breakdowns, causing inconvenience for users and prompting the launch of this replacement contract.
An investment of €1,185,680.00 (excluding VAT) is planned, funded by the Balearic Islands’ Insularity Compensation Mechanism. The tender process, which is now open for bids, began several months ago and has been carried out with the diligence required for public sector procurement and infrastructure replacement.
According to the established timeline, the new escalators at the main entrance are expected to be installed during the first quarter of 2026, as the bidding, awarding, manufacturing, and installation process takes approximately nine months.
In the meantime, work is underway to repair the existing escalators to ensure they remain operational in both directions until the new units are installed. The elevators located next to the northern entrance pergola continue to provide access to the station lobby, both for users with reduced mobility and for the general public.
CTM is also undertaking additional projects to refurbish the Intermodal Station. In addition to the escalator replacement, the installation of fans at the bus platforms is currently in the awarding phase and is expected to be completed during the summer. Other planned improvements to enhance accessibility and comfort at the station include replacing the main entrance doors, renewing tactile paving, renovating public restrooms, and refurbishing the information and customer service office. These actions are also funded by the Insularity Compensation Mechanism, with a total investment of approximately €2.5 million.
The Government remains committed to improving public transport infrastructure in Mallorca to ensure a high-quality, safe, and accessible service for all users.
