The meeting with the Mancomunitat served to clarify questions regarding ITS funding, address specific local needs, and strengthen technical cooperation ahead of the summer season.
The Director General of Water Resources, Joan Calafat, and the Manager of the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (Abaqua), Emeterio Moles, held a meeting this morning with representatives from the Mancomunitat of Pla de Mallorca. Water Resources Meets with Municipalities of Pla de Mallorca to Advance Solutions for Water Supply Challenges
During the meeting, the Water Resources Department conveyed its willingness to collaborate with local councils to help them successfully carry out their projects, particularly those related to water supply and sanitation. Calafat emphasised that “the goal is not to create obstacles, but to facilitate the execution of necessary and urgent investments to improve municipal networks.”
One of the main topics discussed was how the projects submitted by the Mancomunitat del Pla de Mallorca fit within the scope of the ITS funding framework. It was clarified that both individual municipalities and inter-municipal bodies are eligible to submit proposals, provided they meet the requirements outlined in the call.
Several municipal representatives expressed difficulties in handling the technical aspects of the projects, citing the complexity of the processes and a lack of in-house resources. The Directorate General expressed its commitment to exploring ways to unlock stalled projects or adapt proposals to meet required criteria. Attending the meeting on behalf of the Mancomunitat del Pla de Mallorca were its president, Joana Maria Pascual, and representatives from the municipalities of Montuïri, Costitx, Algaida, Sineu, Lloret de Vistalegre, and Llubí.
The Water Resources Department reiterated the Balearic Government’s commitment to supporting inland municipalities with planning and implementing projects that ensure water supply under conditions of efficiency and sustainability. The meeting served to strengthen inter-administrative cooperation in addressing the recurrent supply issues affecting this region—especially during the summer months—and to move forward with solutions that can respond swiftly to local needs.
