The Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) has transferred two residential units on the island of Menorca to the Consell Insular (Island Council) for use by women who are victims of gender-based and sexual violence. One of these homes has been assigned under an agreement involving IBDONA (Balearic Institute for Women). These agreements aim to strengthen essential social services in Menorca and increase support resources for victims of gender violence.

The Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo; the President of the Menorca Island Council, Adolfo Vilafranca; and the Director of IBDONA, Cati Salom, presented the housing transfer agreements this Wednesday. The island council will be responsible for the administration and management of these properties.

IBAVI Transfers Two Homes for Gender Violence Victims to the Menorca Island Council

The first home will serve as a transitional apartment. Its goal is to temporarily house survivors of gender-based violence who, after completing their recovery process, do not yet have access to stable housing that allows them to live independently. The transitional period is set at 12 months. The property in question is an 83 m² apartment with three bedrooms and a parking space. This unit has been assigned jointly by IBAVI, IBDONA, and the Menorca Island Council. As part of the agreement, IBDONA will contribute up to €20,000 to cover the furnishing and equipment of the apartment.

The second home will be exclusively reserved for victims of sexual violence who require emergency, short-term housing. It will provide a safe and confidential environment that guarantees protection and respects their privacy. This unit is a 45 m² apartment with one bedroom, and it has been assigned through an agreement between IBAVI and the Menorca Island Council.

In addition, IBAVI has supported the purchase of premises, in collaboration with IBDONA, which was acquired by the Menorca Island Council with NextGeneration EU funds. The premises, measuring 104 m², will be used for a Crisis Support Centre, aiming to improve the quality of care for survivors of sexual violence.

With these new agreements, IBAVI now has 19 housing units on Menorca assigned through agreements with third-sector organisations or public administrations for vulnerable populations, addressing various situations and needs. Out of the total:

  • 11 homes are for emergency housing situations,
  • 4 homes for minors or youth at risk of social exclusion,
  • 3 homes for women victims of gender violence, and
  • 1 home for individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities.
