The Minister of Health receives the award recognising the best healthcare initiatives involving patient participation and input

“We have listened to the needs of our citizens to provide care that meets their current and future needs,” said García.

The Minister of Health, Manuela García, today received the award granted to the Health Pact of the Balearic Islands by the Platform of Patient Organisations (POP) during the fourth edition of its awards ceremony. These awards recognise the best initiatives developed in Spain by healthcare organisations—both public and private—that have involved or are involving patients and users in their design and implementation.

Minister García was accompanied by Gabriel Rojo, Deputy Director of Humanisation, Patient Care and Training at the Health Service. She expressed great satisfaction with both the achievement of the Pact and the recognition it has received: “We are very pleased with the work done, which is pioneering within our autonomous community. Once again, we have placed people—patients—at the centre. We have listened to the needs of the citizens of our islands to provide healthcare that responds to their present and future needs.”

The Platform of Patient Organisations Awards the Balearic Islands’ Health Pact

The Health Pact of the Balearic Islands was signed on November 12 during a large-scale event held at Son Espases Hospital. The event was attended by the President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens, the Minister of Health, and the Director General of the Health Service, Javier Ureña, among other officials.

Also present were representatives from over 61 sectoral organisations—including healthcare professionals, social partners, patient associations, professional colleges, and scientific societies—that contributed to drafting this historic agreement, which will define the future and roadmap of Balearic healthcare for the next decade.

As the President emphasised during the signing, “The significance of this Health Pact lies in ensuring continuity in healthcare policies and management. Given the challenges we face, we cannot afford to constantly change direction.”

The document outlines six strategic priority areas, which more than 250 participants agreed upon after months of intensive work to ensure high-quality, efficient, and modern healthcare in the Balearic Islands.

These six strategic lines are:

  • Recognition, retention, stabilisation, and recruitment of healthcare professionals to address staff shortages;
  • Modernisation and strengthening of primary care, including its ability to resolve and prevent health issues;
  • A comprehensive approach to chronic conditions, centred on individuals and integrating health and social care;
  • Health promotion, disease prevention, and the encouragement of healthy lifestyles;
  • Addressing mental health issues, emphasising prevention and community-based care, and
  • Increasing scheduled activity and reducing waiting times for specialist consultations and surgical procedures.
