The Bit Foundation has presented diplomas and prizes over the past weeks to the winners of the 2025 Local Tech Solutions (Tecnosoluciones de Proximidad) contest. The initiative aims to foster scientific and technological (STEM) vocations, raise awareness about the role of women in science and technology, and bring technology closer to secondary school students across the Balearic Islands.

The main awards ceremony took place on June 16 at IES Can Peu Blanc in Sa Pobla. The Director General of Innovation and Digital Transformation and Vice President of the Bit Foundation, Sebastián González, presented the award to the school with the highest average score, as well as to the three winning students.

Bit Foundation Presents Awards for the 2025 “Local Tech Solutions” Contest

The 2025 Local Tech Solutions Contest is an initiative organised by the Bit Foundation under the Balearic Government’s policy to promote STEM vocations. This second edition involved 694 students from grades 7 to 10 (1.º to 4.º ESO) representing 10 schools across the Balearic Islands.

The contest was inspired by the travelling exhibitions “Women Who Changed the World” and “Women Changing the World,” which aim to highlight the contributions of women in science and technology, inspire future generations, and especially encourage girls to pursue careers in tech.

During the event at IES Can Peu Blanc, Sebastián González presented a €300 cash voucher and a diploma to the school director for achieving the best average score. He also recognised the talent of the three student winners from the same school: Fátima Yahyaoui Fatah, Marc Vanrell Gost, and Carla Cladera Molina, each receiving a diploma and a pair of wireless headphones.

In his speech, González stressed that the Bit Foundation wants to promote tech careers through initiatives like this because the field offers strong job demand, better salaries, and still lacks female representation.

While the number of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) specialists continues to grow and the sector is key to economic competitiveness—growing 7.4 percentage points, compared to 1.1 points for total employment—gender disparities remain significant. According to Eurostat, in 2024 only 19.5% of ICT professionals in Europe were women, compared to 80.5% men.

Therefore, during the award ceremony, González encouraged girls to keep thinking about their needs and how to solve them using technology, noting that “there are still very few people working in this field, and their perspective is extremely valuable.”

Students proposed innovative tech solutions to real-world problems, such as apps to report illegal waste dumping, creative vehicles to improve road safety, and digital tools to optimise public transport use. These ideas showcased the capacity of young people to identify real needs and suggest innovative ways to improve their communities.

In addition to the Sa Pobla event, prizes were also presented throughout June to other winning schools, with a warm reception from students and staff. The other schools with winning students included IES Bendinat (Calvià), IES Son Ferrer (Calvià), IES Marratxí, and IES Guillem Colom Casasnoves (Sóller).

The 2025 Local Tech Solutions Contest is an initiative of the Bit Foundation, supported by the Directorate General for Innovation and Digital Transformation of the Government of the Balearic Islands, and in collaboration with the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE). The goal is to promote STEM vocations and highlight the contributions of local women scientists and technologists.
