Support consists of €1,000 per month to cover care-related expenses
Today, June 21, marks World ALS Day, a date to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This neurodegenerative disease affects the central nervous system and causes the progressive loss of motor neuron function.
In a pioneering move, the Balearic Government, through the Ministry of Families and Social Affairs, has granted financial assistance to support the comprehensive care of people living with ALS. A total of 93 individuals in the Balearic Islands are currently receiving aid under this scheme, which will allocate €1.62 million over the period from 2024 to 2025.

One Hundred ALS Patients Benefit from the Balearic Government’s Groundbreaking €1.6 Million Aid Program
The monthly subsidy of €1,000 is designed to help ALS patients manage the costs associated with their care. This initiative responds to longstanding demands from ALS patients and their families for greater institutional support.
ALS is characterised by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the cerebral cortex (upper motor neurons), brainstem, and spinal cord (lower motor neurons). This results in a gradual decline in motor autonomy, speech, swallowing, and respiration.
Recognising the complexity and severity of the disease, the Government implemented this grant to support patients throughout the progression of ALS and to strengthen the public care system for people with dependency.
