Education to Build a New Integrated Vocational Training Centre in Bintaufa, Maó, Offering 10 Professional Fields
Antoni Vera, Minister of Education and Universities, along with Alexandra Marquès, the Territorial Director of Education in Menorca, presented the project today during a meeting with Héctor Pons, Mayor of Maó, and the leadership teams of the Pasqual Calbó, Cap de Llevant, and Joan Ramis i Ramis high schools.
During the meeting, the Minister emphasized that this new facility addresses the need to expand and reorganize vocational training in Menorca, and will have capacity for 1,500 students. The center will offer training in the following professional families:
- Physical and Sports Activities
- Administration and Management
- Agriculture
- Commerce and Marketing
- Construction and Civil Engineering
- Electricity and Electronics
- Information Technology and Communications
- Personal Image
- Healthcare
- Sociocultural and Community Services
With a planned built area of 2,700 m², the new CIFP will concentrate the vocational education offering and optimize educational resources. As a result, existing high schools Cap de Llevant and Joan Ramis i Ramis (Maó), and Josep Miquel Guàrdia (Alaior) will no longer provide vocational training and will focus exclusively on ESO (compulsory secondary education) and Bachillerato (high school). The Pasqual Calbó Institute will retain only the Mechanics program.
The construction of this new Integrated Vocational Training Center reflects the strong commitment of the Ministry of Education and Universities to promoting and strengthening VET as a high-quality educational pathway, aligned with the demands of the current labor market. This strategic investment not only expands training opportunities for students but also contributes to reducing early school leaving.
Currently, vocational training in Menorca is distributed across eight centers: one CIFP (Centre de la Mar) and seven secondary schools. This network will soon be joined by another new CIFP in Ciutadella, currently under construction at the former maritime station, and part of the Ministry’s Educational Investment Plan. With a budget of €3,842,536, the Ciutadella center will offer eight training programs in the Hospitality and Tourism sector and will also introduce Food Industry training for the first time.
In addition, under the “Illes en Transformació” (Islands in Transformation) project, the Ministry is also promoting the construction of a new early childhood and primary school in Es Mercadal, with an investment of €8,397,400. The school will include 6 preschool units, 12 primary units, and a UECCO special education classroom, with capacity for 450 students and 7 specialized places.
