The Minister of Health inaugurates an area that promotes the emotional and physical well-being of cancer patients

Son Llàtzer University Hospital has today inaugurated new humanised spaces in its oncology ward, following the complete renovation of the patient and family lounge and the information room. This project was led by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and supported by the generous collaboration of Achinib (Association of Chinese Residents in the Balearic Islands).

The initiative aims to improve the hospital experience for people with cancer and their families by creating warmer, more functional environments that are respectful of patients’ emotional needs. This transformation enables more compassionate support during times of waiting, treatment, or communication with healthcare professionals, thereby strengthening the human-centred approach to care.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, and the Minister of Health of the Balearic Islands, Manuela García, who unveiled a commemorative plaque acknowledging Achinib’s support. Other attendees included Palma’s Deputy Mayor, Lourdes Roca; the Director General of the Health Service, Javier Ureña; Son Llàtzer University Hospital’s Manager, Soledad Gallardo; the President of the AECC in the Balearic Islands, Dr. José Reyes; and the President of Achinib, Fang Ji.

During her speech, Health Minister Manuela García emphasised: “It has been proven that humanising these environments improves the patient experience and promotes their emotional and physical well-being. All of this, of course, goes hand in hand with personalised, empathetic care, and psychological and nutritional support.”

She also publicly thanked the participating organisations: “I want to highlight the generosity of Achinib and the unwavering commitment of the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Their tireless work helps transform hospitals into more welcoming and humane spaces.”

The patient and family lounge will also serve as a venue for psychoeducational workshops, group therapies, and community activities organised by AECC volunteers, thereby expanding its role as a comprehensive support space.

Achinib President Fang Ji stated: “The Chinese community has always wanted to actively participate in local life and give back with gratitude for everything this land has so generously given us. This project is a concrete example of that commitment: we are not just residents of this city, we are active contributors to its construction, its care, and its human progress.”

He further explained: “The funding for this space was made possible through funds raised during this year’s Chinese New Year Fair in Palma. This celebration, beyond being a vibrant expression of our culture, has become a bridge of solidarity that unites cultures and hearts.”

Fang Ji concluded: “We want this tradition to bring unity, hope, and warmth into the hospital’s spaces. That every patient and healthcare professional feels they are not alone, that there is a diverse and committed community walking beside them, offering support, recognition, and respect.”

For his part, the President of the AECC in the Balearic Islands, Dr. José Reyes, stated: “People going through particularly vulnerable situations, such as cancer patients, need not only excellent medical care but also an environment that provides emotional support. This new humanized space improves the experience for patients, families, and caregivers by offering a more welcoming, intimate, and respectful setting.”

He also highlighted: “These spaces enable healthcare professionals to carry out their work in a more intimate and appropriate environment for sensitive conversations, fostering more human and empathetic communication.”

Finally, he gave special thanks to Achinib for its involvement, pointing out that “the Chinese community shows a strong commitment to integration and to building a more supportive, cohesive Balearic society dedicated to collective well-being.”

With this initiative, Son Llàtzer University Hospital strengthens its commitment to humanized care, placing people at the center of the healthcare system and promoting alliances with social organizations that enrich public health.
