The Llar d’Ancians care home, managed by the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) in Palma, celebrated Sant Joan today with a festivity inspired by Menorcan traditions, featuring typical decorations, music, and recreational activities. The event was attended by the Vice President of IMAS, Magdalena García, who joined residents and staff to share in the celebration.

The Llar d’Ancians currently houses 221 residents and provides services to 15 users of its day center, all of whom receive comprehensive, personalized care tailored to their needs. Activities like this directly contribute to improving the emotional and physical well-being of the elderly. They stimulate memory and cognitive abilities, reinforce a sense of cultural identity and belonging, and help prevent isolation, cognitive decline, depression, and loss of self-esteem. These activities also encourage participation in therapeutic and daily routines, foster motivation, and promote a sense of well-being. Moreover, they serve as a non-pharmacological therapeutic tool that enhances interpersonal relationships and humanizes residential life by making it feel more like a home and part of a community.

Vice President García emphasised that “initiatives like this show that IMAS centres are not just places of care, but vibrant spaces that encourage participation, social relationships, and connection to tradition.” She added that “at IMAS, we strive to promote person-centered care models and advance deinstitutionalization, which means offering more humane care, integrated within the community, and focused on maintaining emotional and social bonds.”

The celebration was made possible thanks to the active involvement of both staff and residents, who worked together to prepare all the details for a joyful and meaningful day. The event is part of the Llar d’Ancians’ annual activity calendar, which aims to create a welcoming and participatory environment that remains connected to the island’s cultural life. These kinds of initiatives are part of the Consell de Mallorca’s ongoing commitment to quality social policies and to dignifying elder care across the island.

With actions like this, IMAS—an agency of the Consell de Mallorca—reaffirms its commitment to a person-centered care model that prioritizes quality of life, individualized services, and the promotion of deinstitutionalization as a strategic path toward dignified, active, and community-integrated aging.
