The Spanish Ministry of Social Rights, through the Royal Board on Disability, has launched the campaign “Spanish Sign Language, More Than VITAL” in anticipation of the National Day of Spanish Sign Languages (June 14).

  • Promote awareness, use, and respect for Spanish Sign Language (LSE) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC).
  • Advocate for the right of deaf and deafblind people to access and use their native language in all areas of life.

  • At home, it strengthens family bonds and provides safety for children.
  • At school, ensure access, advancement, and participation in education.
  • Public administration enables the exercise of civil rights, fostering a more inclusive society.

🏛 Official Recognition:

  • In February 2024, Spanish Sign Language and Deaf Culture were declared a Representative Expression of Intangible Cultural Heritage (Royal Decree 155/2024).
  • Since 2020, public funding for sign language interpretation services has increased by 20%, improving services such as video interpretation and communication with public institutions.

👥 Key Figures at the Launch:

  • Jesús Martín, Director of the Royal Board and General Director for Disability Rights, emphasized the vital need to facilitate sign language access in public life.
  • María Luz Esteban, Director of the CNLSE (Spanish Sign Language Linguistic Standardization Center), underlined the importance of research and scientific protection to ensure the survival of the language.
  • Also present were Roberto Suárez, President of the Spanish Confederation of the Deaf (CNSE), and actress Miriam Garló, star of the film Sorda, which portrays the everyday significance of sign language in social, educational, and professional settings.

The campaign features deaf professionals from the Ponce de León Educational Center (Fundación Montemadrid), highlighting their role in bilingual, inclusive education that fosters both linguistic and cultural transmission.
