This project, which involved an investment of €44,000, has been funded through the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

The Department of Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports of the Consell de Mallorca has installed new photovoltaic panels at the Tossals Verds refuge, allowing the facility to achieve 100% energy self-sufficiency for most of the year. This initiative will result in significant cost savings and facilitate the daily operations of the mountain shelter.

Tossals Verds Mountain Refuge Achieves Energy Self-Sufficiency with New Photovoltaic Panel Installation

The renovation of the photovoltaic system, part of the Consell de Mallorca’s network of mountain refuges, involved a €44,000 investment. The installation includes 17 solar panels of 570 W each and 12 lithium batteries with a capacity of 3.6 kWh each, greatly improving the refuge’s energy efficiency.

The installation was financed through the Next Generation EU funds, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).

Pedro Bestard, Second Vice President and Minister of Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports, visited Tossals Verds to inspect the results of the project.

“We have replaced the old solar panels with new ones that are much more powerful and capable of capturing significantly more sunlight, reducing the need for diesel generators,” Bestard explained.

“Photovoltaic solar energy is a clean source of power, and the installation of these panels reduces greenhouse gas emissions and minimizes environmental impact,” he added.

The renovation has allowed the refuge to eliminate one of its two electric generators. Only one gas-powered backup generator remains to ensure electricity in emergency situations. The new panels, installed on an adjacent plot, triple the power output of the previous system.

The Consell de Mallorca’s refuge network is committed to the use of solar energy due to the island’s mountainous terrain and limited access to traditional power infrastructure. Currently, photovoltaic panels are also being installed at the Galatzó refuge in Calvià, with the aim of enhancing energy efficiency and further reducing electricity consumption.
