The municipality heavily depends on water from the Alcúdia desalination plant due to insufficient local water resources

The Government of the Balearic Islands has restored the supply of desalinated water to the municipality of Pollença following the completion of repair works on the pipeline that transports water from the Alcúdia desalination plant.

The repair operation was carried out by the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (Abaqua), under the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle. More than 100 meters of damaged pipeline—affected by successive breakdowns—were removed and replaced with a new section through welding and assembly.

Abaqua technicians will continue to monitor the system in the coming days to ensure the stability of the supply and to detect any possible anomalies early on.

Abaqua Restores Desalinated Water Supply to Pollença After Repairing Pipeline Failure

In recent days, the failure has prevented water from being delivered from the desalination plant, creating a difficult situation for the municipality, which does not have sufficient local water resources to meet its demand on its own. This structural dependence on desalinated water forced the Town Council to adopt exceptional measures, such as usage restrictions and prioritisation of supply in certain areas of the municipality.

It is worth noting that the Alcúdia desalination plant remained fully operational at all times, and that the failure occurred in a section of the pipeline where three previous repair attempts had already failed.

Given the severity of the situation, Abaqua declared the works an emergency, aiming to restore supply to Pollença as quickly as possible. An extraordinary budget of €250,000 was allocated for this purpose.

The intervention now completed by Abaqua aims to provide a long-term solution that ensures sufficient water flow to supply Pollença during the peak season.

The Government emphasises the importance of continued investment in the modernisation of the entire water cycle, particularly in developing alternative resources to well water extraction, thus preventing overexploitation. It also notes that decisions on how to distribute available water at any given time have been made solely by the Town Council, based on its local management criteria.

Minister Juan Manuel Lafuente reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the continuous improvement of the high-level water supply system and to institutional collaboration to ensure water reaches where it is most needed, especially in municipalities highly dependent on desalinated water. He also acknowledged the efforts of technical staff and workers who, despite the high temperatures of recent days, worked intensively to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
