The Sports Councillor, Pedro Bestard, and the Olympic canoeist wrap up the educational and preventive cycle “Natural-ment,” which the institution launched in 2025 in collaboration with high schools in Mallorca to combat overweight and obesity.

Pedro Bestard, Second Vice President and Councillor for Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports of the Consell de Mallorca, and Toni Prats, Island Director of Sports, attended the nutrition-focused event “Do We Eat What We Need?” held at the senior centre in Colònia de Sant Pere. The event marked the conclusion of the “Natural-ment” prevention program against overweight and obesity, which the institution launched this school year, targeting teenagers in Mallorca.

“Do We Eat What We Need?” – Balanced Nutrition with Marcus Cooper, Andrea Ocampo, and the Consell de Mallorca

The talk, led by Olympic canoeist and Consell collaborator Marcus Cooper and dietitian-nutritionist Andrea Ocampo, was organised by the Consell and gathered around one hundred attendees, including teenagers and young people participating in the Acampaesport summer sports camp. During the event, participants were encouraged to reflect on questions such as: “Have you eaten anything today that came in a box or a bag?” or “Have you ever asked yourself whether that’s what your body needs?” They also learned the differences between processed and ultra-processed foods, as well as how to combine the healthiest nutrients in a single meal, among other topics.

Councillor Bestard emphasised that “this event reflects the Council’s commitment to promoting physical activity and natural, adequate nutrition as key tools for physical health and emotional well-being. Young generations need to develop criteria—not only for eating, but also for shopping.” Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, the Consell de Mallorca has brought educational materials into classrooms, offering practical workshops and talks led by nutrition professionals.

“From the Unit for Physical Activity and Health, we work on a model that recommends proper physical activity and nutrition as a foundation for preventing obesity in young people. Marcus Cooper has been a valuable ambassador in delivering this message personally to schools,” said Bestard.

The “Natural-ment” program takes a multidisciplinary approach based on three key pillars: physical education, nutrition, and mental health. The Consell de Mallorca has partnered with prominent figures in sports and nutrition such as elite athlete and advisor Marcus Cooper, and nutrition experts like Neus Cañellas and Gemma Bes—the latter being the personal dietitian of Rafa Nadal.
