With the arrival of summer, Llar d’Ancians in Palma has officially launched its aquatic activities, marked by an institutional visit from Guillermo Sánchez, President of the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS). The initiative, which runs through July and August, transforms the centre’s pool into a therapeutic, recreational, and community-oriented space, open not only to residents but also to neighbourhood locals.

The facility will serve over 240 people, including residents, their families, staff, community members involved in local activities, and third-sector organisations.

Summer Activities Begin at the Llar d’Ancians Pool

Opening Hours and Therapeutic Program

The pool will be open Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., totalling 39 hours per week and nearly 345 hours of use over the summer.

In addition to leisure use, a full program of aquatic physiotherapy and rehabilitation has been scheduled, with both group and individual sessions led by the centre’s specialised staff. These activities aim to improve mobility, ease physical discomfort, and enhance personal autonomy, while also promoting social interaction and emotional well-being.

Safety and Inter-Centre Collaboration

Given the interest shown by other care homes and organisations, the IMAS has strengthened safety protocols by hiring professional lifeguards, who will be present throughout pool operating hours.

Institutional Statements

During the visit, Guillermo Sánchez emphasised the importance of such spaces:

“Spaces like this represent our commitment to a person-centered, holistic approach to care, where emotional well-being, socialization, and physical health are addressed in a coordinated manner. We will continue investing in improving the quality of life of our elderly—both inside care homes and through their connection to the community.”

Active Ageing and Community Integration

This initiative is part of the commitment of the Consell de Mallorca and IMAS to promote active ageing, strengthen social bonds, and foster the progressive deinstitutionalisation of elderly individuals by encouraging active participation in their local community.
