Starting on the night of Sunday, July 13, and continuing for several weeks, there will be only one lane open in each direction while repair work is carried out on the deteriorated structure, to minimise traffic disruption as much as possible.

The Roads Department technicians of the Consell de Mallorca have determined that emergency repair work is required on the Vía de Cintura bridge located at Eusebi Estada Street in Palma, which connects to the Son Castelló industrial estate. The structure is in poor condition and must urgently be chipped and reinforced, as it handles traffic peaks of over 170,000 vehicles per day and has not undergone any intervention for more than 20 years.

Emergency Works Due to the Poor Condition of the Vía de Cintura Bridge at Eusebi Estada Street Connecting to Son Castelló Industrial Estate

To carry out the repairs, two lanes in each direction will be closed, as scaffolding must be installed to access the structure and pillars of the bridge. Therefore, only one lane will remain open in each direction, aiming to minimise traffic disruption. The intervention is being made at this time due to the evident deterioration, with concrete detachment and exposed rebar affected by weathering. Signage and scaffolding assembly will begin on the night of Sunday, July 13, and the works are expected to last approximately three to four weeks.

The works involve cleaning the bridge deck using sandblasting. Then, exposed reinforcement will be treated, applying passivating products to protect the exposed steel and prevent future corrosion issues. The need to compensate for any lost reinforcement will also be assessed, and if necessary, additional rebar will be added. Finally, a protective mortar coating will be applied.

MAINTENANCE ON THE VÍA DE CINTURA

This is the third urgent intervention carried out this year on the Vía de Cintura by the Roads Department of the Consell de Mallorca. It is important to note that major maintenance had not been carried out for decades on Mallorca’s most heavily used roadway. A few months ago, emergency repairs were also required on the bridge over Jacint Verdaguer Street, and the replacement of pedestrian footbridges, some nearly 50 years old, was initiated.

Additionally, 8 kilometres of the Vía de Cintura were resurfaced recently to replace pavement that was over 40 years old, and modern safety barriers were installed. The objective of all these interventions has been to eliminate hazards and improve traffic flow on a road that, in some sections, handles between 170,000 and 190,000 vehicles per day on average.
