The historic building of Es Sindicat de Felanitx, owned by the Consell de Mallorca, has drawn significant international attention with a total of 26 architectural proposals submitted through the Europan 18 European competition. The site stands out as one of the most sought-after locations among the fifty participating across Europe, ranking second in Spain, only behind Barcelona-La Verneda.
Selected as the only site from the Balearic Islands in this edition, Es Sindicat aims to be reimagined as a cultural and social centre, blending tradition, innovation, and sustainability. The high number of submissions highlights the building’s symbolic, community, and heritage value, recognised as a landmark of Mallorca’s industrial past.

Minister of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, expressed satisfaction with the international response:
“The interest Es Sindicat has sparked among young architects across Europe confirms the building’s vast potential. Its status as one of the most requested Europan 18 sites shows that Mallorcan society holds a living heritage capable of inspiring transformative projects.”
Fuster also emphasised the Consell’s commitment to breathing new life into the building by preserving its historical identity while opening it up to new uses that meet today’s community needs. The winning design will serve as the foundation for this transformation.
The proposal was submitted by the Balearic Government’s Directorate General for Housing and Architecture, in collaboration with the Consell de Mallorca and the Felanitx Town Council. Their joint needs assessment stipulates that the selected project must preserve the architectural heritage while promoting new uses that revitalise cultural, social, and economic life in the town.
In May, to coincide with the opening of the competition, the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, symbolically opened the building’s doors to participating architects. The event included technical and historical briefings by Consell experts, and emotional testimonies from former winery workers, reflecting the deep emotional and collective value Es Sindicat holds for Felanitx residents.
Now, with all proposals formally submitted, the competition enters its evaluation phase, which will unfold as follows:
