The Consell de Mallorca has joined the Board of Trustees of the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation. For the first time, the island institution is allocating €100,000 to help preserve the legacy of the internationally recognised Mallorcan artist. The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, highlighted that this funding will be used to digitise the Foundation’s documentary archive, organise the 2nd Joan Miró International Seminar, and promote cultural activities to disseminate his work.

The Consell de Mallorca Joins the Board of Trustees of the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation

Today, Galmés visited the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation to learn firsthand about the conservation and cultural dissemination efforts carried out by the institution. During the tour, he was accompanied by Antònia Roca, Vice President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, and by the Foundation’s Director, Maria Antònia Perelló. During the visit, Llorenç Galmés emphasised the importance of preserving Joan Miró’s legacy as an essential part of Mallorca’s living heritage and underscored the significance of this collaboration:

“Joan Miró’s legacy is of immense cultural value. It is essential to ensure universal access, not only for the public but also for researchers and artists around the world.”

Projects to Preserve Miró’s Legacy

One of the main initiatives resulting from this collaboration is the Foundation’s incorporation into the Platform of Historical Archives of the Balearic Islands (PAHIB), led by the University of the Balearic Islands. Vice President Antònia Roca emphasised the importance of this development:

“This initiative will allow the digitization, cataloguing, and classification of a historical and cultural heritage closely linked to Miró, ensuring its preservation and public access.”

Furthermore, this effort will align the Foundation’s documentation with international standards such as ISAD(G), facilitating consultation by both scholars and the general public.

At the same time, in line with its commitment to research, the Foundation will host the 2nd Joan Miró International Seminar, coordinated by Enrique Juncosa and featuring prominent international experts such as Matthew Gale, Joan M. Minguet, and Juan Manuel Bonet. This academic forum will delve into the artist’s work and legacy and will help strengthen the Foundation’s research and international standing.

Lastly, new cultural projects will also be promoted. Among them is the “Summer Party for Miró’s Friends”, an artistic event combining art, music, dance, and gastronomy in the Foundation’s unique garden setting. This cultural initiative aims to become a key annual event on Mallorca’s cultural calendar and to foster deeper ties between the Foundation and the community.

These projects reflect the shared commitment between the Consell de Mallorca and the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation to protect, study, and promote the artist’s legacy. This living heritage is a fundamental part of Mallorca’s cultural identity.
