A total of 684 people over the age of 65 have submitted applications this year for aid from the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS), aimed at purchasing technical support and mobility products such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, or dental prostheses. This represents a 13% increase compared to the 603 applications registered during the previous call.

This rise in demand has also led to a higher influx of people at the IMAS citizen service offices. During the month the call for applications was open, 384 in-person consultations were recorded to resolve doubts and provide guidance on the process.

The president of IMAS and Minister of Social Welfare, Guillermo Sánchez, emphasised that “the large number of applications received confirms that this aid reaches where it is truly needed and responds to a real need of the elderly.” In this regard, he stressed that “our priority is to continue promoting personal autonomy and active, healthy ageing, ensuring no one is left behind.”

These grants, which could be applied for until June 27, are funded with a budget of up to €375,000 and cover expenses made between April and December 2024 for the purchase of products that help maintain or improve the functional autonomy of older people.

This initiative by the Consell de Mallorca, through IMAS, is part of a broader set of measures supporting active ageing and promoting the quality of life of older people on the island, reinforcing IMAS as a key pillar in Mallorca’s social policies.
