This project prevents supply risk situations in the event of disconnection.
The new infrastructure eliminates overhead power lines and supports a more sustainable and secure energy model.
The construction has been coordinated across regional, local, and national administrations, with a total investment of €35 million.
The Minister for Business, Self-Employed and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, and the Director General of Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, Diego Viu, visited the new Sant Jordi substation in Ibiza to mark the completion of work and the commissioning of the island’s “Southern Axis” — a project that significantly improves the quality and security of power supply across the territory.

Ibiza’s “Southern Axis” Enters Operation — A Key Infrastructure to Strengthen the Island’s Power Supply
The event was also attended by:
- Vicent Marí Torres, President of the Consell d’Eivissa
- Mariano Juan Colomar, First Vice President and Minister of Territory, Tourism Planning, Mobility, Road Infrastructure and Anti-Fraud Efforts
- Beatriz Corredor, President of Redeia
- Mayors from the municipalities of Ibiza, Sant Josep, Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Antoni de Portmany, and Sant Joan de Labritja: Rafael Trigueros, Vicente Roig, Carmen Ferrer, Marcos Serra, and María Tania Marí, respectively.
The new Southern Axis infrastructure includes a €35 million investment and consists of:
- A new underground 132 kV line between the Eivissa and Bossa substations (a 4.7 km double-circuit line)
- A new 132 kV switchyard adjacent to the existing 66 kV yard at Sant Jordi substation
- Other upgrades involving repowering and voltage changes of existing lines
This project was carried out through a collaborative agreement among the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Spanish central government, Red Eléctrica, the Consell of Ibiza, and local municipalities.
Minister Sáenz de San Pedro emphasised that the Southern Axis offers a more sustainable alternative to the former “Es Fornàs” project, avoiding the need for an overhead double-circuit line crossing the island and the construction of a new outdoor 132 kV substation in Sant Antoni.
During the visit, the Minister and Director General also held a working meeting with representatives from the Consell d’Eivissa and the island’s local councils.
🔋 Integrated Project for Grid Security
The “Southern Axis” decisively strengthens the island’s overall energy supply, especially in the south and west regions. Its commissioning will prevent supply risk in case of power disconnection.
In addition, energy storage batteries are currently being installed on land next to the existing Sant Antoni substation. These batteries will be fully integrated into the transmission network and are designed to complement the Southern Axis, maximizing the use of the submarine interconnection with Mallorca.
This interconnection enables major benefits for the Balearic Islands’ interconnected electrical system, including:
- Reduced need for local fossil-fuel-based power generation
- Lower system-wide energy costs
- Significant CO₂ emission reductions
- Increased integration of renewable energy sources
