During the conference “The State Coastal Law from a Regional Perspective”, the Balearic Government calls for fair funding, clear criteria, and effective tools to improve coastal management and eliminate administrative bottlenecks.
The Government of the Balearic Islands has signed the Manifesto for the Defence of the Spanish Coastline and Its Responsible Management, a joint document denouncing the lack of state investment and emphasising the need for coordinated action between administrations.
The signing took place during the conference “The State Coastal Law from a Regional Perspective”, organised by the Valencian Regional Government through its Directorate General of Coasts, Ports, and Airports, which brought together representatives from the Canary Islands, Galicia, Andalusia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands in Valencia.
The meeting served to share experiences, common challenges, and proposals to move toward more effective coastal management, with adequate resources, clearly defined competences, and genuine cooperation between regional governments and the State.

Lack of Resources and Need for Clarity
The Balearic Government recalled that the transfer of coastal management responsibilities to the Balearic Islands was carried out without providing the necessary human and financial resources to effectively manage the archipelago’s 1,500 kilometres of coastline.
It also warned of the absence of financial compensation for revenues generated by the public maritime-terrestrial domain fee, which continues to be collected by the State, and stressed the need to clarify administrative functions to avoid overlapping competences that slow down procedures.
Toward a Comprehensive Coastal Management Law
In this context, the Government presented the draft bill for the Comprehensive Coastal Management and Planning Law of the Balearic Islands, promoted by the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle. This new regulation will establish a specific legal framework adapted to the island’s reality, aiming to organise coastal uses, protect its heritage, and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The Balearic Government reaffirms its commitment to responsible coastal management, adapted to the impacts of climate change and aligned with the identity and uniqueness of the territory. In this regard, it reiterates its willingness to collaborate with other regional governments and the State to advance toward a more effective, fair, and sustainable coastal governance model for the Balearic Islands.
