Emergencies: Maintain Orange Alert for Rain and Storms in Ibiza and Formentera and Yellow Alert in Mallorca and Menorca

A total of eight incidents have been recorded, none of them serious.

The Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior of the Government of the Balearic Islands has maintained the orange alert (Severity Index 1 / IG-1) of the Special Plan for Adverse Weather Events (METEOBAL) due to the forecast of rain and storms in Ibiza and Formentera. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), rainfall so far has mostly occurred at sea; however, the Directorate General of Emergencies recommends maintaining caution over the next few hours. There have also been storms with electrical activity and strong winds.

The yellow alert (Severity Index 0 / IG-0) for rain and storms remains active in Mallorca and Menorca; the yellow alert (IG-0) for coastal phenomena remains in force across all the Balearic Islands; and the alert has been raised to orange (IG-1) for “rissaga” (meteotsunamis) in Menorca.

The Technical Advisory Committee met at 8 p.m. today at the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior and decided to keep the alerts active as a precautionary measure. The committee included representatives from the Government Delegation, the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior, the Directorate General of Water Resources, AEMET, IBANAT, SAMU061, Emergency Services of the Island Councils of Ibiza and Formentera, the National Police, Civil Guard, Red Eléctrica, IBASSAL, and IBdigital.

Rainfall recorded in recent hours has caused several incidents in the Balearics, none of them serious. In total, eight incidents were reported: in Ibiza, there were four (a small agricultural fire caused by lightning and three drifting boats); in Mallorca, three fallen trees were recorded; and in Menorca, one drifting boat.

The Director General of Emergencies and Interior, Pablo Gárriz, sent a message of reassurance to the population and thanked the citizens of the Balearic Islands for their responsibility in following the recommendations of the Emergencies Department, thereby avoiding unnecessary dangerous situations.
