Following the official presentation of the medal, the audience gave Pieras a warm standing ovation. In his heartfelt speech, Pieras expressed gratitude and recalled his origins, his vocation as a teacher, and his passion for safeguarding Inca’s heritage.

Mayor Virgilio Moreno emphasised that “the medal we present today is not a prize, but a mirror. It reflects everything Gabriel Pieras has given to this city.” He added that Pieras “has been the eyes that have looked at our past, the hands that have protected our memory, and the voice that has explained to our children and grandchildren who we are.”

The event featured musical performances by Maria Heim and Lorenzo Santamaría, closing an evening that will remain in the memory of the Raiguer capital.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Inca’s Memory

Gabriel Pieras Salom was born in Inca (Mallorca) in 1942. For more than 40 years, he worked as a primary school teacher and Catalan language professor at Beat Ramon Llull School in Inca. He is the author of an extensive written body of work about Inca’s history, heritage, and culture, rescuing much of the town’s past from oblivion through publications and contributions to local media.

Since 1986, he has served as Inca’s official chronicler, later becoming honorary chronicler, and was also named honorary archivist of the city. He directed the Municipal Historical Archive between 1983 and 2019 and was also responsible for the Parish Archive of Santa Maria la Major between 1978 and 2015.

The Inca City Council previously honoured him with the Dijous Bo Honour Award. He has participated continuously since 1994 in the Local Studies Conferences of Inca and is a member of their Scientific Committee, in addition to taking part in various historical congresses and conferences throughout Mallorca and Spain as part of the Royal Association of Official Chroniclers of Spain.

Pieras has published over 3,000 informative articles about Inca in the weekly newspaper Dijous (1975–2020) and has collaborated uninterruptedly in programs for Inca’s patron saint festivities and the Dijous Bo fair since 1969. He has also contributed to other media outlets and regularly delivered lectures and guided tours, making the town’s rich historical and cultural heritage accessible to all citizens.

Through this tribute, the City Council of Inca not only recognises Pieras’ impeccable professional career but also a lifetime dedicated to loving, understanding, and sharing Inca with passion, rigour, and generosity.
