The Consell of Mallorca is preparing the reopening of the Maritime Museum of Ses Voltes after a year and a half of closure. The Vice President of the Consell of Mallorca and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, announced this Friday that the renovation of the museum is already underway and is expected to be completed in time for reopening at the end of September.
According to Roca, “this marks the end of years of irregularities and safety issues, and, for the first time, we are launching a museographic project that will showcase and narrate the history of Mallorca’s maritime heritage.”
“It had been more than three years since the museum was considered safe, but thanks to the efforts of recent months, we have resolved a situation that posed a risk to thousands of visitors each year,” Roca emphasised. She also explained that from now on, “the museum will have a new museographic project that ensures accessibility for everyone, with adapted spaces, inclusive resources, and a content presentation designed for all audiences.”

The Consell of Mallorca Launches the Renovation of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca to Reopen in September
The Vice President and Minister, together with the Director of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca, Albert Forés, visited the ongoing works this Friday to observe the progress firsthand. This phase, Roca explained, is the final stage, as safety measures have already been implemented: “The new smoke detection system is already installed, ensuring a quick response in case of emergency, and water is now supplied to the fire hoses,” she stated.
Roca confirmed that the Maritime Museum of Ses Voltes is expected to reopen in September with all safety measures in place and with the new museographic project: “The new exhibition project of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca is a firm commitment to innovation, inclusion, and the dissemination of maritime heritage. The exhibition will be divided into five rooms and an educational space, and will feature audiovisual resources that allow visitors to enjoy an immersive and enriching experience,” she said.
The new museographic project
The project is structured around three thematic axes:
- The preservation of underwater and terrestrial maritime heritage.
- Marine biodiversity.
- A space for reflection and debate on contemporary issues related to the sea.
Its main goal is to showcase Mallorca’s history through its connection to the sea and to create a bond with visitors that allows them to understand maritime heritage as an essential part of the island’s identity.
The exhibition will be complemented by a rich collection of objects from various fields: unpublished archaeological pieces from underwater sites, ship models, and more. All this material will be accompanied by audiovisual resources illustrating maritime trades and crafts.
Accessibility
The new exhibition project of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca is distinguished by its commitment to accessibility, ensuring an enriching experience for everyone.
- All written materials have been prepared following the easy-to-read system to facilitate understanding.
- Informative panels have been validated by the CLARA Cognitive Accessibility Office, the Balearic coordinator for people with disabilities.
- Each exhibition room includes Braille systems and QR codes offering audio guides and content in sign language, as well as auditory systems compatible with cochlear implants to facilitate guided tours.
The physical design of the museum has also been adapted with accessible doors to guarantee entry for everyone in this space, which is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). In addition, a new exterior signage project has been developed to clearly indicate the museum’s location in Ses Voltes, increase its visibility, and facilitate access.
