President Galmés Thanks King Felipe VI for His Commitment to Mallorca
The president took the opportunity to present to the King the main challenges and concerns of the Consell de Mallorca, focusing on tourism management, mobility, and the national political situation.
Managing Tourism Success
Llorenç Galmés conveyed to the King that Mallorca faces the challenge of promoting sustainable and responsible tourism, to improve coexistence between residents and visitors. In this regard, the president of the island council explained to Felipe VI that the Consell has implemented a new model focused on tourism containment, reducing the maximum number of tourist accommodations from 430,000 to 412,000 and intensifying the fight against illegal offerings.
“We want to grow in value, not in quantity,” Galmés stated, emphasising that these changes are already showing results.
Sustainable and Safe Mobility
Regarding roads, President Galmés informed the King about the efforts being made to address traffic congestion and road safety issues. These include the creation of an access plan worth €164 million, as well as other initiatives such as the Civic Roads Plan and the Park‑and‑Ride Plan. He also informed him about a pioneering legislative proposal to regulate vehicle entry into Mallorca — a project supported by key stakeholders and intended to lay the foundation for the island’s future mobility.
Concern Over Political Situation and Government Inaction
Given the meeting that the King will hold this Tuesday with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, Galmés expressed his concern about the national political situation. The Consell president lamented that the Spanish Government has continued to extend the 2023 budget and has failed to address Mallorca’s needs. He cited as examples the refusal to update the road agreement, inadequate management of the migration crisis, and lack of investment in key infrastructure such as Palma Airport.
He also expressed concern about the failure to update the insularity allowance for state officials, which affects the quality of public services and security on the island, as well as difficulties in cultural heritage matters — such as the opening of the archaeology rooms at the Museum of Mallorca or the transfer of Alaró Castle.
The president assured that, “despite the neglect by the central government, the Consell de Mallorca will continue to firmly defend the interests of the people of Mallorca wherever necessary.”
During the meeting, the president also expressed his gratitude to the royal family for continuing to be the “best ambassadors of our island around the world.”
