The proposed meeting to address issues under the State’s jurisdiction was agreed upon at the last Conference of Island Presidents.
The delegate’s refusal not only blocks the necessary coordination between administrations but also disregards the institutional framework of the Balearic Islands, in which the island councils play a fundamental role.
The Government of the Balearic Islands and the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera regret the decision of the Spanish Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, to refuse a joint meeting with the President of the regional Government and the four island presidents. This meeting could also have included the Mayor of Palma and the President of the Federation of Local Entities (FELIB) to jointly address and coordinate, from the different administrations, the issues and concerns of citizens regarding matters that fall under the jurisdiction of the Spanish Government. This meeting proposal was agreed upon by the regional president and the four island presidents at the Conference of Island Presidents held last May 5 in Ibiza.

The Government and the Four Island Councils Regret That the Spanish Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands Has Refused to Hold a Joint Meeting
To comply with this agreement from the Conference of Presidents, on May 22, the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands formally requested this joint meeting with the Spanish Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands. However, after several exchanges of communications — offering to hold the meeting at the Consolat de Mar and reiterating that the proposed format stemmed from an agreement of the May 5 Conference of Presidents — the Spanish Government Delegate rejected the proposal for a joint meeting, agreeing only to meet with the regional president and relegating the island council presidents to subsequent individual meetings.
The Government of the Balearic Islands and the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera consider that, with this stance, the Spanish Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands not only blocks the necessary institutional coordination of the various competent administrations in the Balearic Islands to address certain issues in the citizens’ interest but also demonstrates disregard and lack of understanding of the role of the Conference of Island Presidents as an organ of collaboration and institutional coordination, as well as of the political and institutional framework of the Balearic Islands Autonomous Community, in which the island councils — which the Spanish Government Delegate proposes to exclude from this meeting — play a fundamental role.
