The collaboration and outreach efforts of the Consell de Mallorca have made it possible to double the number of host families participating this year in the initiative organized by the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearic Islands.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, welcomed today at the Palau del Consell 28 Sahrawi boys and girls who are spending the summer on the island through the “Vacances en Pau 2025” program, accompanied by their host families. The reception was also attended by the Councillor of the Presidency, Toni Fuster.

During the visit, the President expressed his gratitude for the solidarity of the Mallorcan families who make this program possible year after year, as well as the work of the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearic Islands (AAPSIB). Llorenç Galmés stated that “this program represents much more than just a holiday: it means being able to live, for a few months, far from war and the harsh conditions of the refugee camps. Here, they can feel safe, cared for, and loved. They can simply be children.”

For her part, the President of AAPSIB, Catalina Rosselló, highlighted the importance of this institutional support to ensure the continuity of a project that has, for decades, provided hope and health to Sahrawi children.

The children, aged between 8 and 10, will stay in Mallorca for nearly two months, during which they will receive basic medical care, participate in cultural and leisure activities, and enjoy an enriching experience both for them and their host families.

A Strengthened Commitment

During the audience, President Galmés reaffirmed the Consell de Mallorca’s commitment to the Sahrawi people, highlighting that in 2025 a total of €124,000 will be allocated to various initiatives channeled through the Mallorcan Fund for Solidarity and Cooperation.

Specifically, €80,000 will be allocated to the Sahrawi Child Health Program, aimed at ensuring pediatric and nursing care, as well as nutrition and vaccination initiatives for children aged 0 to 5. Additionally, an extraordinary €25,000 has been approved to reinforce a specific food program.

Furthermore, the Consell de Mallorca continues to support the “Vacances en Pau” program with a contribution of €19,000. Thanks to the institutional backing and outreach efforts of the island’s governing body, the number of host families has doubled this year, from 20 to 40, allowing more Sahrawi children to enjoy a stay in a safe and caring environment.
