The island’s team returns from Orkney with 14 medals and an impressive ninth-place finish

The Island Council of Menorca held an official reception for the Menorcan delegation that took part in the 2025 Island Games in Orkney. The island’s team earned a total of 14 medals, achieving an impressive ninth-place ranking among 24 delegations in the overall medal table — one of Menorca’s best results since it first participated in 2007.

The President of the Island Council, Adolfo Vilafranca, welcomed the delegation and expressed his pride in the outstanding results they achieved. “It has been an experience we will hardly forget. We lived each competition, each moment, intensely. What impressed us most was your attitude both on and off the field. The team spirit, constant determination to improve, respect, humility… All of this shows that we may be a small island in territory, but we are very big in talent, values, and determination.”

The President also wished to extend his gratitude to the coaches and support teams, the families, the clubs and federations, the organisers of these Games in Orkney, and above all, the Menorcan athletes who represented the island. “Your success is collective, but it is also the result of many hours of training, sacrifices, perseverance, and passion. You show us that when Menorca sets its mind to something, when we all work together toward the same goal, we can achieve truly remarkable accomplishments,” he added.

Nevertheless, Vilafranca reminded everyone that this is not the end of the road: “The future inevitably leads us to a challenge we all share: ensuring that Menorca becomes the host of the 2033 Island Games. Seeing your performance and your level in Orkney, I am convinced we are ready to face that challenge,” he concluded.

Finally, the Menorcan delegation returned the pitcher and the flag — symbols of the traditional Island Games Water Ceremony — and the president and council members presented a gift to each of the participating athletes.
