The project will enable annual energy savings of over 449,000 kWh and prevent the emission of more than 122 tons of CO₂
Funding provided by the Next Generation EU plan
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, through the Fundació per a l’Esport Balear, has launched an ambitious project to renew the lighting systems of the track at the Velòdrom Illes Balears, located on Uruguay Street in Palma. The initiative, financed under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan with Next Generation EU funds, has a total budget of €2,253,580.62.
This project aligns with the European objective of promoting a real energy transition in public infrastructure, with an expected reduction of more than 30% in greenhouse gas emissions, in compliance with the criteria established in Recommendation (EU) 2019/786 and the Council Implementing Decision related to Spain’s Recovery Plan.
The intervention forms part of component C26.I02.P2 “Modernisation of Sports Facilities – Energy Sport 2.0 Plan”, included in objective CID 373 of the Recovery Plan, which calls for the renewal of sports facilities based on energy efficiency and sustainability criteria.

Government Allocates €2.2 Million for Full Renovation of Lighting System at Velòdrom Illes Balears
A Modern, Efficient, and Versatile System
The new system will replace the current 257 floodlights with a total of 436 next-generation LED floodlights, accompanied by an intelligent control system and an innovative mobile structure using trusses and cranes. This infrastructure will enable more versatile lighting use, better accessibility for maintenance tasks, and the ability to adapt the space to large-scale sports and cultural events.
Thanks to this upgrade, the Velòdrom Illes Balears will not only comply with current sports lighting standards (UNE-EN-12193) but also optimize energy consumption according to event type, achieving savings of up to 95% for recreational or school uses and 81.89% for national or international competitions compared to the current system.
Energy Savings and Emission Reductions
The new installation is expected to save 449,022.30 kWh annually, equivalent to a reduction of 122.58 tons of CO₂ per year. These figures position the Velòdrom Illes Balears as a benchmark sports facility in Spain in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2025, the deadline set for actions financed under the European funds of the Recovery Plan.
