The Consell Insular of Menorca has secured the designation of Menorca as the host venue for the Spanish National Long-Distance Athletics Championships for the 2026, 2027, and 2028 editions, as approved by the Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA). Menorca to Host the Spanish National Long-Distance Athletics Championships in 2026, 2027 and 2028

Menorca previously hosted the Championships this past May, thanks to an initiative led by the Department of Culture, Education, Youth, and Sports. Now, it has once again been chosen to stage this top-tier sporting event for three consecutive years. The competition includes the 10,000-meter Spanish Championships (senior and master’s categories) and the 5,000-meter Spanish Championships (U20 and U18 categories), bringing together the best long-distance runners in the country, both male and female.

“We are thrilled. In just two years, the Consell Insular has achieved two major milestones: driving the renovation of the Maó athletics track and securing its designation as the venue for top-level competitions,” said Joan Pons Torres, Councillor for Culture, Education, Youth, and Sports.

The Municipal Athletics Track of Maó will once again host the Championships on May 9, 2026, making it a pioneering venue in the Balearic Islands. The previous edition attracted 179 elite athletes, including Juan Antonio Pérez, Ilias Fifa, Maitane Melero, and Isabel Barreiro.

“The impact of this competition on the island’s economy was and will continue to be highly positive. Athletes will return accompanied by coaches, club presidents, and family members, meaning around 500 people will visit the island each May for three consecutive years. This helps to de-seasonalize tourism and extend the tourist season,” added the Councillor.

With this renewed designation, Menorca strengthens its position in the national athletics calendar and reaffirms the Consell Insular’s commitment to promoting grassroots sport, attracting national events, and boosting the island’s social and economic vitality through sport, while also promoting Menorca beyond the high season.
