The drafting of the project, with a budget of €217,002, is funded by the 2024–2025 Sustainable Tourism Tax Program and aims to improve the water supply to the municipality of Sa Pobla.

The Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle has initiated the procurement process for the project design service to connect the municipality of Sa Pobla to Mallorca’s main drinking water supply network. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve water resource management in the Balearic Islands, reduce pressure on aquifers, and ensure a high-quality and continuous drinking water supply in the northern part of the island.

The contract tender has a base budget of €179,340.73 (excluding VAT), totalling €217,002.28 (including VAT), and is fully financed through the 2024–2025 Sustainable Tourism Tax Program, aligned with the Pact for the Management of Main Water Supply Systems and Resource Guarantee.

The Government Launches Project Drafting to Connect Sa Pobla to Mallorca’s Main Drinking Water Network

The launch of the procurement procedure responds to the cooperation protocol signed between the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Mayor of Sa Pobla, which aims to address water supply issues through connection to the main network managed by ABAQUA. This action follows previous initiatives to improve the water cycle in the municipality, such as the complete renovation of the wastewater treatment plant, which was visited on the same day the protocol was signed, May 22.

This project is particularly significant in the current context of drought and the deterioration of groundwater resources in terms of quantity and quality, as is the case in Sa Pobla, where nitrate contamination is present. It also aligns with the need to replace groundwater extraction with non-conventional sources, such as desalinated water.

In addition to enhancing the public water service and optimising the performance of the Alcúdia Desalination Plant (IDAM), this project will contribute to the recovery of aquifers and groundwater bodies by reducing current extraction levels.

The project design phase will have a maximum execution period of 180 days and will be processed under an open procedure.

With this action, the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle fulfills the Balearic Government’s agreements and reaffirms its commitment to efficient, sustainable, and responsible water resource management, progressing toward a more resilient and environmentally conscious water model for the Balearic Islands.
