The Minister of Culture, Education, Youth and Sports of the Island Council of Menorca, Joan Pons, held a press conference this Thursday, August 7, to express his support and gratitude to the technical team of the island’s administration that drafted the general road renovation project in the Rafal Rubí section. In this regard, the Minister called for “respect for the rigorous and professional work of the Council’s technicians”, particularly those from the Historic Heritage and Mobility departments.

The Minister also sought to reassure the people of Menorca:

“The project has received all the necessary favorable technical reports and ensures maximum protection of the archaeological heritage of Talayotic Menorca.”

Pons emphasised that the project promoted by the Island Council complies with all recommendations issued by UNESCO, including the removal of temporary structures near the navetas, such as construction remnants and electrical infrastructure. It also includes the installation of a vegetative screen and other corrective measures to reduce visual impact on the heritage site.

“For this government team, the archaeological heritage of Menorca is of great importance, as is the safety of its residents. That is why, after eight years of halted road works, we have allowed our technicians the time and space to do their job over the past two years to deliver the best possible project for Menorca. This is not a political project, but a technical one,” stated the Minister.
Road safety and heritage protection are not only compatible — they are key goals of this administration.”

Finally, the Minister made an appeal for responsibility and urged opposition parties to:

Stop politicizing a technical and collective project like the renovation of the general road and the preservation of Talayotic Menorca. Menorca deserves better than an opposition that constantly discredits technical work and continues to block and politicize necessary actions for public safety and the preservation of our historical legacy.”
