The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has approved a new ministerial order, soon to be published in the Official State Gazette, to boost financial support for extraordinary measures promoted by the Canary Islands Government to ensure the security of the archipelago’s electricity supply.

The new order recognises the costs associated with 137.8 MW of additional manageable capacity in Gran Canaria — 87 MW more than in the previous order — while maintaining recognised capacities in Tenerife (71.6 MW) and Fuerteventura (32.8 MW).

Funding Increased to Strengthen Power Supply in the Canary Islands

Third Vice-President and Minister Sara Aagesen stated that the measure “reinforces funding for emergency actions” and addresses the needs identified by Red Eléctrica and the Canary Islands Government.

The procedure, completed in just three months, incorporates technical improvements based on reports from the regional government and the CNMC. The order covers costs for three years, extendable if requested by the autonomous community and if the measures remain necessary.

Aagesen noted that this action complements other initiatives for the islands, such as the programme for 100% renewable islands, power plant modernisation, grid investments, and the energy transition plan to increase the role of renewables and storage.
