The Ministry of Youth and Childhood and the Spanish Youth Institute (Injuve) have released the “Guide to Tenants’ Rights”, aimed at providing young people renting a home with practical information to protect themselves from potential abuses.

Minister Sira Rego stated that the guide “responds to a social demand and a political commitment: to provide concrete tools so young people can know and defend their rights.” Injuve’s Director-General, Margarita Guerrero, explained that the agency’s studies and consultations have identified confusion, lack of information, and vulnerability among young renters, which increase their legal insecurity.

The guide offers key recommendations, including:

  • Avoid sending sensitive documents through apps like WhatsApp.
  • Do not pay agency fees (these must be covered by the landlord).
  • Choose long-term contracts for stronger protection and stable rents.
  • Understand rights regarding renewals, terminations, rent updates, and expense allocation.

It also addresses common landlord abuses, such as false claims of personal use to evict tenants, fabricated non-payment cases to initiate eviction, or unlawful withholding of deposits. The publication explains legal procedures for making claims, the eviction process, and provides information on how to access public housing and rental assistance.
