In the Mallorcan town of Consell, public outrage is growing after it became known that reusable banners, purchased with a grant personally secured by councillor Margarita Llabrés Deyà, have been in the Town Hall’s possession since the end of last year and have still not been put up.
At present, Llabrés is not part of the Local Government Board and is a non-affiliated councillor. This situation prevents her from taking part in decision-making and, therefore, from deciding to put up the banners.

In the eyes of many residents, this appears to be an attempt by the Town Hall to disregard the work done by Llabrés in obtaining the grant and the materials, leaving them locked away instead of using them for local festivities. These banners were purchased to decorate the festivities sustainably, reduce waste, and avoid the annual expense of single-use materials.
Far from fulfilling this purpose, the banners remain stored in boxes, while the council has once again opted to purchase single-use plastics, which, after the celebrations, end up in the trash.
“This situation is absurd. We have the material, and it’s not being used. There’s a lot of talk about sustainability, but in practice it’s just smoke,” says Llabrés Deyà.
The councillor calls for the banners to be used in the upcoming festivities, stressing that their use is not only more economical, but also more consistent with the environmental commitment the Consell Town Hall claims to uphold.
