The Balearic Government has seized a batch of olive oil from a rural tourism establishment in Mallorca over alleged fraud regarding the product’s origin and for refilling bottles used in the restaurant.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Natural Environment, the operation was carried out by the Food Quality and Control Service, under the Directorate General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products. Inspectors found that the establishment was selling virgin olive oil as if it were extra virgin, claiming it was produced on the estate and originated from Mallorca, without the numbered label from the Mallorca Olive Oil Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which certifies authenticity and provenance.

It was also confirmed that bottles offered to customers were being refilled with virgin olive oil (not extra) sourced from a mainland mill, a practice strictly prohibited under food regulations. Additionally, the restaurant’s menu advertised produce allegedly grown in an organic garden on the property—which did not exist—and other ingredients claimed to be local that were not.

The Balearic Government highlights that such inspections aim to protect the region’s producers from unfair competition, prevent consumer deception, and safeguard the reputation of local products and designations of origin. It also reminds that serious violations can result in administrative fines ranging from €3,000 to €60,000.
