Children who are about to have a new sibling will be able to see the route their mother will take throughout the birth process.

The project “Will You Become a Big Brother or Big Sister? Come and Visit the Hospital” is the latest initiative from the team formed by the Maternity Delivery Service and the Obstetric Inpatient Unit at Manacor Hospital. The Breastfeeding Committee aims to revive a program—once very well received—that allows children, accompanied by their mother, to explore the route she will follow on the day of delivery. The goal is for mothers and their children to discover the Delivery Service and Obstetric Inpatient Unit together.

Will You Become a Big Brother or Big Sister?

The program will start on the first Tuesday in September and will run again in December, March, and June 2026. As explained by the professionals involved, the children will be able to visit the place where their new sibling will be born, meet the team that will care for their mother, and then take part in a demonstration on how to bathe, dress, and comb the baby. Clowns from Sonrisa Médica will also be present to accompany them during this fun and engaging visit.

Midwives will inform expectant mothers about the program and invite them to attend, accompanied—if they wish—by the father or by the person who will be with their older child on the day of delivery, often a grandmother or another close family member. The idea is for this accompanying person to later act as a “storytelling partner” for the child, reminding them of the visit and recounting moments such as, “Now mommy is waiting for your little brother to come out of her tummy in that room we saw—do you remember?”

The first visit will be on Tuesday, September 2, starting at 10:00 a.m. Expectant mothers, their children, and accompanying family members will be welcomed by the heads of the Delivery Service and Obstetric Inpatient Unit in the hospital lobby, where they will begin the tour through the waiting area, enter the delivery room, and finish on the second floor, where they will see how baby care is carried out and step inside one of the rooms. The visit will end with a performance by the Sonrisa Médica clowns, adding a joyful touch to this special experience for soon-to-be big brothers and sisters.
