In light of high summer temperatures, the Mallorca Council, through its Department of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, has issued a series of important safety recommendations for enjoying mountain hiking safely during the hottest months. The goal is to prevent health risks such as heatstroke while encouraging responsible outdoor activity.
The Hiking Unit and Dry Stone Route emphasise the importance of adapting hiking plans to seasonal weather conditions and always prioritising safety.
According to Pedro Bestard, Second Vice President and Minister for the Department, “It is essential to take basic precautions to avoid heatstroke and other health risks, so that we can continue enjoying our hiking routes safely.”

Tips for hiking in extreme heat
🔁 Flexibility and good judgment
- If temperatures exceed 30 °C (86 °F), it is best to reschedule the hike or choose a cooler, alternative route.
- Avoid paths that are completely exposed to the sun without shade or alternate options.
- Those with existing health issues should be especially cautious and consider whether it is safe to proceed.
💧 Hydration and nutrition
- Carry at least 2 liters of water per person and drink at 30-minute intervals.
- Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
- To maintain energy, consume fast-absorbing sugars, nuts, cereal bars, and light meals that are easy to digest.
🗺️ Route planning
- Research the route, elevation gain, duration, start/end points, and difficult sections in advance.
- Factor in the impact of heat when estimating hiking time.
- Identify shaded areas, such as forests, as ideal spots for resting.
- Start your hike early in the morning to take advantage of cooler temperatures and avoid the hottest hours of the day (from 12:00 to 16:00).
🎒 Proper clothing and equipment
- Wear lightweight, breathable, and light-colored clothing to reduce heat absorption.
- Use a wide-brimmed hat or cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), and reapply it during the hike.
- Choose quick-drying shorts and short-sleeved shirts.
- If you experience a headache, vomiting, confusion, rapid breathing, or any signs of heatstroke, stop immediately, seek shade, cool down, and hydrate.
In case of emergency, contact 112 immediately.
