Balearic Islands Maintain Full Employment in July

“The most significant figure is that we continue to lead, by far, in full employment at the national level,” highlighted María Luz Moreno, Director General of Labor and Occupational Health, who stressed that “we are a hardworking community, and anyone who wants to work can do so.”

Self-Employed

The Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) reached a total of 107,375 affiliations in the Balearic Islands in July. This represents 16% of all Social Security affiliations in the region, a proportion notably higher than the Spanish average, where self-employed workers account for 15.6%.

In relative terms, the Balearic Islands experienced a 2.1% year-on-year increase (2,171 more affiliations than last year), compared to 1% growth nationwide. A monthly rise of 192 affiliations (+0.18%) was also recorded compared to June.

“The leading sector in terms of affiliations is self-employment, which shows that the policies implemented by this administration to support this group are working,” Moreno stated, adding that “the Balearic Islands are a land of entrepreneurs.”

Unemployment

Registered unemployment stands at 25,386 people, a 7.3% decrease compared to July 2024 (2,013 fewer people). However, compared to June, unemployment rose slightly by 664 people (+2.7%), a usual fluctuation during peak season due to adjustments in seasonal hiring.

Moreno assessed these figures positively, noting that “the overall trend remains clearly downward” and that “the Balearic Islands continue to consolidate themselves as one of the regions with the best labor indicators in Spain.”

Employment Contracts

In July, 42,495 employment contracts were signed in the Balearic Islands, of which 29,182 were permanent, representing 68.7% of the total. This positions the Balearic Islands as the leading region in stable employment contracts, far above the national average of 38.4%.

“The improvement in job quality is real,” said Moreno, adding: “We continue to lead the national ranking in permanent hiring, which reflects a strong labor market capable of generating stable jobs.”

Job Seekers

The total number of job seekers registered with the Balearic Islands Employment Service (SOIB) in July was 55,032 people, representing a monthly increase of 2,073 people (+3.9%) and a year-on-year increase of 313 people (+0.6%). This group includes both unemployed individuals and those currently employed who are seeking career advancement or job changes.

“The Balearic labor market is active, open, and able to absorb workforce demand,” Moreno highlighted. “These figures show that economic dynamism translates into employment, which is fundamental to citizens’ well-being.”

Data by Island

Mallorca remains the driving force of the Balearic labor market. In July, 30,715 contracts were signed, of which 19,802 (64.5%) were permanent. Registered unemployment stands at 21,585 people, an 8.2% year-on-year decrease. The number of job seekers is 45,363 people, up 0.3% compared to last year.

Menorca recorded 3,823 contracts, of which 2,736 (71.6%) were permanent — a figure above the Balearic average. Unemployment stands at 1,529 people, down 4.7% year-on-year, while job seekers total 3,986 people, up 3% compared to last year. The data reflects stability and predominantly permanent hiring.

Ibiza formalized 7,281 contracts, of which 6,103 (83.8%) were permanent — one of the highest rates in the archipelago. The number of unemployed stands at 2,204 people, practically unchanged from July 2024 (+0.2%). Total job seekers are 5,407 people, up 1.8% year-on-year. Permanent hiring remains especially high in the services sector.

Formentera registered 676 contracts, of which 541 (80%) were permanent. Unemployment stands at 68 people, down 13.9% year-on-year, while job seekers total 276 people, a 14.6% decrease compared to July 2024. Formentera shows the best relative figures for reducing both unemployment and job seekers.
