Government’s Coastal Cleaning Service Removes 6,479.55 Kilos of Waste in July

Mallorca records the highest volume of collection (3,656.70 kg), followed by Ibiza (1,265.65 kg), Menorca (1,135.60 kg) and Formentera (421.60 kg)

During July, the coastal cleaning service managed by Ports de les Illes Balears (PortsIB), an agency under the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle, removed a total of 6,479.55 kilos of waste from the shores of the Balearic Islands, averaging 209.02 kilos per day. The work is carried out by 23 boats, divided into two categories according to their operating area: beach-type boats, which work in shallow areas, and coastal-type boats, which can operate up to five miles offshore.

Mallorca accounted for most of the waste collected, with 3,656.70 kilos, followed by Ibiza with 1,265.65 kilos, Menorca with 1,135.60 kilos, and Formentera with 421.60 kilos. In terms of collection by boat type, beach boats gathered 4,198.15 kilos, while coastal boats removed 2,281.40 kilos.

As for the composition of the waste, almost half consisted of plastics (47.69%), followed by wood (36.66%), organic waste (7.05%), vegetation (5.77%), oil (0.32%) and various other materials (2.51%).

In addition to routine collection, special actions were carried out in July to deal with various incidents. In Mallorca, two boats were towed, a turtle was rescued, and a fuel spill was removed; in Menorca, a fuel spill and plastic drums were also removed; in Ibiza, two pedal boats adrift were towed; and in Formentera, a sunbed, a beach umbrella, and a wheel were retrieved.

During this period, six alerts were also attended: four in collaboration with Maritime Rescue and the 112 emergency service, and two at the request of institutions or private individuals.
