Balearic Government to invest €6 million in buying a rural estate in Mallorca for agricultural research

The aim is to provide the Balearic Islands with a dedicated facility — similar to other regional research centres in Spain — to conduct trials, train technicians and farmers, and transfer knowledge and technology to the agricultural sector. The estate will also host studies on how different crops in the archipelago respond to climate change, to improve farm productivity and competitiveness.

Estate requirements

  • Location: Mallorca.
  • Minimum usable agricultural area: 48 hectares (40 irrigated, 8 rainfed).
  • Connection to the electricity grid and water suitable for irrigation.
  • Compliance with the technical specifications detailed in the BOIB tender document.

Full details will be available from 11 August at www.caib.es/sites/irfap/ca/adquisicio_finca_experimentacio. Queries can be sent to contractacio@irfap.es or made by calling +34 971 17 60 84. The government aims to finalise the purchase before the end of the year using insularity factor funds.
